Approaching the Alan mountain hut by car

From the main road (Adriatic "Highway") above Jablanac (sign at Štirovac) 17 km by road. The road is paved up to 15,5 km and it is of rather good quality later as a stone road. Yet it is fortunately not steep. It is at the same time a sort of division mark between Northern and Middle Velebit. Shortly before arriving at the hut the road crosses the mountaineering path coming from the seaside side from Siča. About 300 m after the Alan Hut (height 1340 m a/s) it crosses the path of Premužić at the place called Kosica where there is a monument to the Alan unit. And 2 kilometres further on after the left turn for Lubenovac it reaches the very top of Veliki Alan (Big Alan) saddle (1414 m) that is also called Prosika. Here it crosses several mountaineering paths, to Goljak peak on the left and on the right for Kita. The road goes further to Lika and the Štirovača region. It is well marked by signposts from Alan on.

From Krasno (signpost for Štirovača) 35 kilometres. This is the best approach by motorcar, and well marked by signposts. It follows the asphalt road for about 26 kilometres up to Mrkvište (a long, one storey hut to the left from the crossing, 3 km before Štirovača) and to the right of the crossing there are 9 more km of good macadam road up to the mountain hut Alan (PK Alan). The remaining 300 m is in somewhat poorer condition. One can take another worse alternative over Veliki Lubenovac by leaving the paved road sooner at the crossing of Begovača near PK Careva koliba hut (Yellow house). The length of the way is similar, yet it is much worse. Going from Krasno one should pay attention to the trailer trucks filled with logs that tend to appear unexpectedly behind the curves on the paved road with bad visibility. It is recommended to leave the lights on and keep strictly right. On weekends there is less danger.

From Donji Kosinj to Alan (34 km). (At Donji Kosinj it is possible to stay overnight in the mountain hut of the Vukelić family.) From the bridge over the Lika river there is 1.2 km of asphalt road up to Gornji Kosinj and then further to Bakovac and a small village Ribnik (there is a church of St. Vid from the year 1769, also a few stone inscriptions in Glagolitic script from the Frankopani period; at Kosinj there used to be one among the first Glagolitic printing-plants). Here the asphalt ends. Two kilometres behind the church, at the crossing, you ought to turn right up the hill. After 8 kilometres of forest road on the right there appears a beautiful meadow Begovača with the hut for forest workers and a natural water spring. A little further (1,5 km) some 30m off the road there is an interesting Roman remains called Pisani kamen. About 4 km after Begovača one reaches the asphalt road Krasno-Štirovača. You take the road to the left, and pass the Careva kuća hut (Žuta kuća/Yellow House) and continue on the asphalt road up to Mrkvište and then on the right you take the macadam way, which is 9 km more until you arrive at Alan hut. In the last time the better way is the left road from Kosinjski Bakovac up to the paved Štirovača road, then left 2-3 km to Mrkvište crossing (long cottage on the left). On the crossing, right to Alan.

From Gospić over Pazarište (some 50 km altogether) you can go by car, but the road is in a rather bad condition. There are several unmarked crossroads, thus the orientation might be a problem. (You should keep to the road that has been driven on more frequently. From Gospić to the crossroads in the village Klanac there are 13 km. You can come here also from Perušić over the Lika Bridge (9 km). Then you pass Gornje Pazarište on the asphalt road up to Donje Pazarište (9 km). Further on through Velika Plana on the mountain road to Pazarišni Bakovac. After that the way enters the wood and climbs up to forester's cottage on Klementa (26 km). Further the road goes steeply down the hill through dense wood and to the mountain meadow Petrašica (33 km), and about 200 m away it arrives at the longitudinal Velebit road, and then on the right to the asphalt road in Štirovača for some 2,5 km. Then you take the asphalt upwards, 3 km to the crossing Mrkvište (long cottage on the right) and further to the left on quite a good macadam and a well marked road to Alan hut.

From Gospić over Jadovno (about 60 km) on a macadam road up to Kugina kuća hut and further along the longitudinal Velebit road to Štirovača and as described above.

From Baške Oštarije over Šušanj and above Crni Dabar on the longitudinal Velebit road up to Kugina kuća hut and further as described previously. The road is in a rather good state with several marked turnings that are mostly blind allies.

Zavižan hut - Alan hut (35 km). Taking the longitudinal macadam road from Zavižan over Lomska Duliba (there is only one blind turning to the right) until you reach the asphalt road Krasno - Štirovača, and further on upwards according to the signposts to Mrkvište i.e. to Alan hut as it was previously explained.
