Welcome to web site of the hut Alan (Velebit, Croatia)!

Croatian version English version

The hut Alan is situated on the verge of a beech wood at the seaside side of Velebit mountain road passage Veliki Alan at the above-sea level of 1340 m. It is being run by the Planinarsko-orijentacijski klub Sljeme. Since the middle of June until the end of September a constant duty is organised, while from the beginning of October there is duty for weekends. They usually work for greater holidays and according to what has been settled with mountaineers on duty. Announcing a more numerous group and detailed information can be obtained on telephone numbers or e-mails of mountainarees on duty.

The house is a sort of log-cabin with one floor. On the floor there are 5 rooms with 46 beds. It is recommended to bring with you your own sleeping bags, and in case someone does not possess any, there are enough blankets, which is necessary even in the midst of summer as the night temperature amounts only to 12-14 grades. On the ground floor there is a kitchen with all necessary utensils so that you can prepare and eat the food you have brought with yourself. Behind the house there is a cistern. Water is connected with the kitchen in summer time. One should use it rather sparingly in order to keep some for those arriving later. The water for washing is provided on two spots near the building. There is no electric power. There exists only a battery for illumination at the sink. The lighting up is otherwise by candlelight or gas. It is not allowed to use candlelight or open gas flame on the floor because of fire danger. Only battery light is used. There are a few parking places next to the house and larger vehicles can turn round somewhat lower on a meadow of Alan. The mountain hut Alan can offer beverages and simple meals according to possibility and in arrangement with mountaineers on duty. For the general benefit the care about it is taken by mountaineering society. It is being run by unselfish voluntary work of a small amateur mountaineers group and by voluntary contributions. The house does not have electric power, but it does possess a lending library containing about 150 titles won as presents, which are at the disposal of visitors who rest after their mountaineering tour.

It is by all means worth mentioning that in the vicinity of Alan hut one can find more than 150 species of birds, from the ash-grey eagle up to the tiny redbreast. Velebit itself is about 50% richer with plant species than the whole of Great Britain, only as an example. It is a true ornithological and botanical paradise. Because of its forests and clear air it has been called a world reservation of biosphere. The mountain itself is built of the thickest and most frequently distributed among calcareous (cretaceous) rocks on this planet as well as almost the whole of the Adriatic coast, thus it is full of stone fossils that had long ago formed the bottom of the primeval sea. With its porous stone the terrain is rich in bizarre stone forms produced by water, so that one could easily shoot several films taking pictures only of them. On the territory of the National Park and broader there are almost all sorts of European wild, beginning with the bear, lynx, wolf, fox, mouflon, deer, chamois, hare, all kinds of reptiles, lizards, insects and endemic newly discovered sorts from the depths of over kilometer deep holes. There is also a first-class scenery value. Besides walking, there is great chance of all sorts of camera shooting. It is indispensable to take with you as good photography equipment as possible and take as much time as you might need. Taking into account that Velebit is almost uninhabited there still exist large areas of practically untouched nature where you can enjoy its relaxing peace with due respect. It is possible that you meet no person at all for days. You can still listen to primordial silence here. You can hear the voice of the mountain. Something is talking to you. One who can hear that always returns again.

The ALAN hut is situated in the middle of Northern Velebit National Park being at the same time a control and an information point of the National Park. The ecological standards are its primary concern. The mountaineers on duty would like to use this opportunity in order to express their gratitude to the visitors for not leaving around pieces of paper or packaging in the surroundings and looking after flowers.

istory - The hut was built in 1957 as a forest cottage for the needs of Forester's Office Jablanac within the project of construction of an industrial cable-car by which the logs were sent down to the seashore in Stinica near Jablanac and transported elsewhere by boat. The cable-car was a British credit as equipment help to the then state. It proved to be unprofitable in only two year's time, as it was not functioning most of the time because of frequent Velebit winds. It was taken over by the management of Goli Otok prison. On the terraces by the forest cottage there used to be a few wooden shacks where political prisoners lived and worked guarded by armed watchmen. Soon it was all given up and somewhat later the Penal institution Goli otok was closed down itself. The shacks were turned down and the end the forest hut remained left at the mercy of the mountain that soon began disrupting it. In agreement with the Forestry Office of Senj the hut of Alan started being used by mountaineers (the Jablanac Forestry Office was soon closed). The key belonging to the new mountain hut was for years kept by Mr Dane Vukušić who used to spend with his wife most of the summer in their neighbouring cottage at Mirovo, which is close to the old, already abandoned mountain cottage, but the hut was in fact always open. There were no provisions or any real care for the house that was being ruined more and more. In the middle of the eighties during the summer vacation, former head of the then HPS Economic commission began the duty there with his family and some other volunteers. A few years later, regular duty of mountaineers were started in shifts throughout the summer. With their enormous enthusiasm the hut has recently been brought into much better condition than it used to be, and for ten or more years occasional visitors are sure to meet certain equipment and provision during the summer season.

Welcome to our modest mountain hut!
